Board up the windows of that abandoned hospital if you must, but if the dead ever come back to life as zombies and begin infecting the population, a group of Canadian researchers don't hold out much hope for our survival.

A group of University of Ottawa mathematics students and their professor came to their dire conclusion after developing a simple model similar to one researchers might use to track the spread of a pandemic.

The best part for me is the professor's name: Smith? (with the question mark!)

Eccentric professors are the best, aren't they?

Earlier this afternoon I read an article on CBC.ca about the Canadian Medical Association calling for an independent "czar" to oversee swine flu vaccinations. As I usually do (and this is just evidence that I shouldn't), I scrolled down to see the comments that some other readers had posted, and at the top of the list was this one:

Is just me or is there alot of czars being posted in powerful positions around the world. I think (if my grade 9 social history is correct) Czars had powerful postions in the U.S.S.R and that (as I recall ) was not good.

Just some food for thought.

Food for thought indeed. Just about the education system.

Fellow Canadians and Canadian-savvy folks on here ought to be aware that certain political organizations can get carried away and become rather Himmler-esque in their attempts to infiltrate civil society, but today things reached a new, twisted low. Evidently a few of my fellow York University students managed to secure a series of e-mails through the Freedom of Information Act which reveal that the federal Conservative Party, the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, and the university administration interfered in this year's York Federation of Students (YFS) elections. Full story courtesy of CNW Group here.

For those who don't know, this year's student union elections were particularly intense, even for a university that's well known for its over-the-top political intensity. We had just come off of the biggest university strike in Canadian history a few months earlier, during which the YFS had become a lightning rod for controversy when it publicly sided with the striking student workers. Students were mad (mad at who depended a lot on how they viewed organized labour in general), TA's were mad, the sitting YFS executives practically painted bull's eyes on their foreheads, and the university administration was out for the blood of everyone who had made them look bad. In the midst of all of this, York students learned today...

Robert Tiffin, York University's Vice-President Students, warned the students' union not to disqualify candidates who were caught violating the elections rules because the University and members of Parliament "were watching the election closely." MP Peter Kent was later found to have assigned a key staff member to intervene in the election on behalf of a team of candidates. Both politicians appeared to ask if York would throw out the results, despite no evidence of wrongdoing or any authority to do so.

Krisna Saravanamuttu, the newly elected YFS president had a couple things to say about it:

"The student elections were run in a fair and democratic manner and in accordance with our bylaws... The York Administration and members of the Conservative Party have no right or authority to interfere in the elections of the students' union simply because they disagree with student criticisms of their policies."

"The York Federation of Students is accountable only to the 44,000 undergraduate students at York University and the Ontario courts... University administrators and Conservative politicians interfering in student elections is like an employer attempting to select union representatives. Their objective in silencing opposition is quite obvious here."

Apparently this isn't an isolated incident involving a couple rogue legislators, either. The article also points out that earlier this year, Conservative MP Peter Baird was caught giving Waterloo student groups linked to the party a somewhat clandestine workshop on setting up front organizations to siphon money away from student activity budgets in order to advance the party's agenda on campus.

I have to confess, I didn't vote in this year's YFS elections. I'm uninterested in the petty campus politics that goes on at York, which I think the YFS is traditionally involved in way too deeply, and I believe that none of the candidates would represent my interests any better or worse than the others when it comes to the core issues that a student union is supposed to deal with. But all of that was before I found out Conservative politicians and university administrators are attempting to install student union executives who represent their interests over the interests of the students.

[info]gloryinthunder is the victim of my meme crimes.

1. Post a list of 15 fandoms.
2. Have your friends list guess your favorite character from each fandom
3. When guessed, bold the fandom, put in brackets who got it and a sentence why you like the character/person.

I promise I'll try not to be too obscure, guys.
1. Full Metal Panic - Sousuke Sagara (Striker) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ-_wi40_kY&feature=related
2. Stargate SG-1 - Jack O'Neill (Striker) Wise-cracking, butt-kicking, world-hopping Macgyver with guns. (Honourable mention to Wuf for Rodney McKay. If it was Stargate Atlantis, you'd be right!)
3. Firefly - Jayne (Wuf) Raw aggression, complete and total security in his masculinity, and dumb as a post; I laugh harder whenever Jayne Cobb opens his mouth than with anyone else on the show.
4. Belgariad/Malloreon - Silk (Striker) All things being equal, I have to respect a guy that's in a constant state of "up to no good." (Honourable mention to Rowena for Durnik. He's a very close second, and being a guy with completely mundane capabilities, a rare find in a fantasy series.)
5. Macross - Roy Focker (Wuf) When he flies to Hikaru's rescue in his variable fighter and is asked the question, "Are you drunk?!" his response is "How can I fight a war if I'm afraid of a little alcohol?"
6. Record of Lodoss War
7. History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi
8. X-men - Wolverine (Striker) I've been a fan of Wolverine ever since I got my very first X-men comic almost 20 years ago, featuring a massive three-way brawl between him, Sabertooth and Omega Red - before I even knew he was Canadian!
9. Metalocalypse - Toki (Wuf) "I love sausage festivals!", "Hey guys, checks out my codspiece!", "That's why they call it SPELLING!", etc.
10. Gundam Seed/Gundam Seed Destiny
11. Avatar the Last Airbender - Sokka (Striker) No one takes him seriously because he's wise-cracking and self-effacing, but it always somehow turns out that he was the one who was right about everything all along.
12. Pumpkin Scissors
13. Full Metal Alchemist - Roy Mustang (Striker) The lazy, womanizing procrastinator should always be the one who saves the day in the end.
14. The Lunar games
15. I lied, this is getting too hard: Malazan Book of the Fallen. I bet you NO ONE has read that!

Here's a little something someone posted in a comment over at Strange Maps, in the entry "If Maps Could Fight." Props to Waffles for showing me that one a while back, by the way!

A peek at the history of US warfare (with a dash of Israel thrown in) from the Second World War to the Second Gulf War. Here's the webpage for the video, which lists each conflict and identifies the countries by food on the "Official Food Fight Character Cheat Sheet." Just for kicks, watch the video once without looking at the spoilers just to see how much you can get.

Post a comment and I'll list 5 things that I associate with you, then you write about them in your LJ. My first five things come from [info]zita_skyandano. Ikuze!

The Future: This isn't really something about me, cheater :p My plans for the future aren't all that grand. Step one after Striker and I finish school is to get the hell out of Toronto. I've had just about as much of this city as I can take on every level XD Where to go from there is a bit tricky, though. I could pretty much live anywhere in the country, but the wife's not a big fan of the cold, so that rules out... everywhere from the BC interior to central Ontario. The east coast isn't exactly a place you go to find a job (though that might be changing in the next couple years if they can get their oil industry going - fat chance with Alberta's guy Harpo running the show >_>), and Quebec has been officially vetoed. That pretty much leaves the southern half of Ontario (which I'm not all that fond of) or the west coast ($$$$$$!). We also need to consider the size of the community we move to - I can teach anywhere, big or small, but with Striker in the tech industry we kind of require something at least on the city level. Of course, I'd like to travel first before we throw ourselves right into it ($$$$$$!). Personally, I want to see some places in Europe that aren't on the typical travel list: Finland, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, in addition to the usual Netherlands, Germany, etc. I have no real interest in seeing France or the UK (since I live in France/UK Junior!), but I might want to pop by the latter anyway to harass [info]silverwindblade ;)

Writing: Ah, cruel mistress. I have so many ideas to write, but so little time or energy. All of my effort goes into writing papers for school... which I guess I do quite well, but they're not nearly as enjoyable as pounding out a few chapters of sci-fi or fantasy fiction. Lately I've been in more of a mood to try to make time for working on some of my writing projects, though, with fresh ideas always popping into my head, mostly due to reading a lot of alternate histories, as well as the very excellent Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Canadian author Steven Erikson. I don't know if you can get the books outside Canada, and I feel sorry for you if you can't, because he really has a unique way of telling a fantasy story where he integrates his knowledge as a trained archaeologist and anthropologist into his work, that will probably affect my style in the future. Makes me feel less bad about being a history geek :p

Roleplaying: Arguably my main hobby since I was about 14, and consequently, how I met my wife. There's been a lot of really screwed up relationships between roleplayers that I've witnessed over the past eleven (!) years, but I'm happy to say this is one of about four that I know have worked out. I got my start in roleplaying via video games - back in primary school, me and a couple friends used to write a lot of fanfiction for various platform RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Lunar) that we played... as well as BattleTech *cough*. Later on when home internet connections actually became feasible and worthwhile in northern Ontario, one of those guys came back to me and told me about these sites online where we could, quote, "Like make our own Chrono Trigger characters and write about them with other people." Ossim! Eleven (!!) years later, here I am running three RPG boards of my own and having participated in about a dozen web-based roleplaying projects. Perhaps ironically, I have never played a Chrono Trigger fan character or in a CT game. I would probably play Toma. Poor, unfortunate, awesome Toma the Explora.

...I just realised, that probably isn't MEDIEVAL COLA that you pour on his tombstone. Huh.

Guild Wars: The only MMORPG I can afford! Actually, that's probably not quite true, I'm just a cheapskate. GW is a game that pretty well fits my MMO 'lifestyle'. I don't need to devote a double-digit percentage of my whole life to the game in order to build my characters up to a decent level of power and equipment, since the mechanics favour skill over hours played (the trick isn't having that 'godly' weapon or piece of armor, but finding proper skill and equipment combinations). Since I'm not paying a monthly fee and issues of server malfunctions or data loss NEVER come up, whenever I get sick of it I can just put it on the shelf for a few months, then pick up again when the urge strikes. Currently I have a character from each of the professions save Mesmer, though my favourites are my rare earth elementalist Xifeng Zheng, my bow-spike ranger Faerian Stormfall, and my assassin Genshiro Ikeda - whom I'm training as a critical-barrager with the eventual hope of replacing my aforementioned ranger as my primary long-range attack character. GEEK OFF.

Macross: Simultaneously my favourite anime and sci-fi series. I've had a love affair with Macross literally since before I could remember, and before I even knew it was Macross. The "first" time I encountered the series was when TeleToon aired Macross Plus when I was in grade 10, and I was instantly hooked by the action, crazy visuals, and complex characters. I learned that it wasn't actually my first exposure to the franchise, though, when my dad sat in on my viewing of the third episode and said, "Oh I remember this. You used to watch this stupid show when you were five." It turned out Macross = Robotech XD In any case, I've been a big, big fan of the series since then, although I still think Plus was the best of the bunch. I think what really stands out for me are the characters and the superb storytelling, distinct from other sci-fi/action/mecha anime like Gundam; not to say Gundam is brainless, but it does get formulaic and throws so many characters at you that there isn't much time for significant development. A Macross series can go entire episodes with minimal to no variable fighter action, and I'd still be hooked just because of the character interaction. There aren't too many series out there where the main romance cultivated over the long term between two protagonists actually falls out!

It's late and this is getting long, so I'm going to do [info]myuumaster's and [info]somethingsoft's in another post WHEN I FEELS LIKE IT!

Striker meme, attack!
Make your band's album cover meme:

1 - Go to Wikipedia. Hit "random"
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to Quotations Page and select "random quotations"
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote on the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to Flickr and click on "explore the last seven days"
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use Photoshop (or your choice of photo editor) or similar to put it all together. (for Photoshop users: Album cover size is about 4.75" x 4.75")

5- Post it on your livejournal, and tag other people to play, too :)

The Result:

Glasshouse Mountain Railway Station, Queensland is a power/speed metal band originally from Japan (as evidenced by the name of their debut album, above). They have never been to Australia, but they are sure it's very nice.

"I cannot praise Japan any longer. The war is not to protect the country but the inevitable result of the way Japan has developed into a nation. … I feel that I have to accept the fate of my generation to fight in the war and die. I call it ‘fate’, since we have to go to the battlefield to die without being able to express our opinions, criticize and argue pros and cons of issues, and behave with principles, that is after being deprived of my own agency…. To die in the war, to die at the demand of the nation – I have no intention whatsoever to praise it; it is a great tragedy."

Neapolitan Women Hold Sex Strike over Illegal Fireworks

From BBC:
New Year's Eve could prove to be something of a damp squib for some men in the Italian city of Naples.

Hundreds of Neapolitan women have pledged to go without sex unless their men promise to refrain from setting off dangerous illegal fireworks.

Local authorities are backing the women and have sent out text messages urging the men to "make love, not explosions".

But wait!

"If a sex strike is what it takes in order to get the attention of our men, husbands, partners and sons, then we're ready for it," Mrs Staiano, 44, told Italy's Ansa news agency.

...what exactly goes on at New Years Eve parties in Italy?
